Local fish suppliers the key to meals with zero food miles at The Harbour Restaurant, Port Isaac.

A Cornish restaurant has taken the concept of low food miles to its ultimate extension with its new menus making the most of Port Isaac’s fish and shellfish suppliers.

Chef Emily Brown has created new lunch and dinner menus focussing heavily on the produce landed daily on the harbourside just metres from the restaurant. Emily’s main suppliers are her husband John, who runs fishing trips on his boat ‘Winnie the Pooh’; and Just Shellfish, owned by John’s brother Jeremy and his wife Liz.

The result is that the majority of the fish and all shellfish served at The Harbour Restaurant has come straight off Port Isaac boats, up the slipway, and into the kitchen - transported the short distance solely by foot.

“Looking out of the door of the restaurant the sea is right there on our doorstep; it feels right that the food we serve should have come from the local boats whenever possible, and our new lunch and dinner menus reflect this,” said Emily.

“Everything John catches comes in here so we have a steady supply of sea bass, mackerel and lemon sole, and all our crab and lobster comes from Jeremy and Liz. Whatever else we need we get from Cornish producers, with Dennis Knight supplying the rest of our fish, meat from Williams and Son in Wadebridge, and cheese from Hanson Fine Foods”

Emily has been joined in the kitchen by fellow chef Lucy Rollins, who has spent the past six years working on private yachts and villas in the British Virgin Islands. Together they have revamped The Harbour’s menu to take full advantage of the fresh fish and seafood landed in the village.

As well as Port Isaac crab bruschetta, the new lunch menu includes a delicious take on fish and chips: monkfish in Doom Bar batter served with homemade chips and tartar sauce. And the £12.50 lunch special - pan fried scallops with lemon, garlic and rocket; a bucket of chips; and a glass of house wine - has been so popular Emily has made it a permanent fixture at The Harbour.

Dinner is just as tempting. From the evening menu Emily’s favourite is wild sea bass cooked in a parcel with lemon, chilli, fennel and Vouvray broth, served on bortelli beans. There is also a Mediterranean-inspired red mullet with black olive and anchovy crostini; and ever-changing specials depending on the daily catch.

“At The Harbour we are in such a fantastic location, right next to the sea, that it seemed crazy not to take advantage of what is right here in front of us,” said Emily. “Cornwall has some of the best fish in the country, and the best thing about eating here is that nobody gets it fresher.”

The Harbour Restaurant is open every day from 10am for coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. Tables for lunch can be reserved between 12 and 2.30 pm, and dinner is served every day (except Sunday) from 7pm.

For reservations phone Emily on 01208 880237. More information, including directions to The Harbour Restaurant can be found at www.theharbourportisaac.com.

Notes For Editors

The Harbour Restaurant, located in a unique 15th century building on the edge of the water at Port Isaac, has a daily changing menu focusing on fresh, local produce. Chef Emily Brown creates rustic dishes using some of the best produce available in Cornwall, including seafood landed each morning at Port Isaac, meat from nearby farms, and local cheeses. Complementing the menu, the wine list is continually evolving, featuring great vintages from smaller vineyards at refreshingly affordable prices.

The Harbour is run by chef Emily Brown. After training at a top London cookery school, Emily worked for three years in the restaurant industry in Burgundy. Her time there brings French and continental influences to the dishes she creates, which use the best Cornish ingredients available including a wide variety of just-caught seafood, lobster, crab, mackerel and sea bass.
