Kids Will Love The Free Surf Relief Festival This Saturday 18 July At Watergate Bay
Giant crabs, pro surfers and a dance troupe are just some of the elements making up a packed day of family entertainment at the Surf Relief Festival, Watergate Bay this Saturday 18th July.
The event, which is completely free to attend, will feature a vast array of children’s activities - plus top-level surfing and Ironman competitions, beach games and live music - to make the Surf Relief Festival one of the best days out this summer.
Organiser Dave Manley, Chairman of Surf Relief UK, said: “We’ve put together a fantastic package of activities and competitions which will appeal to spectators as well as those who are keen to get active on the day.
“The Surf Relief Festival is a free event, and our goal is to raise awareness for our SurfAble project which introduces disabled children to the sport of surfing. As well as having a great day on the beach, we’re hoping that everyone who comes will be able to make a donation to help us continue making a difference to these children’s lives.”
The action starts at 9.00am as some of the country’s leading pro surfers take to the waves of Watergate Bay for the first heats of the UK Pro Surf Tour.
Then at 10.30am children from four Cornish surf lifesaving clubs will be taking part in a Nippers Carnival. The competition develops the skills required for the lifeguards of the future, and there will also be a chance for children to have a go on the day with a Beach Flags relay competition.
A feast of children’s activities will be led by Julia Tooley of Busy Bodies, starting at 11.30am. In addition to running their unique children’s parties throughout the day, Busy Bodies have enlisted experts in other fields to ensure that children have a fantastic time.
Dance troupe Ark Entertainment will be running two dance workshops, while face painters and t-shirt designers will see the beach transformed into a hive of creativity. Sports enthusiasts will be able to take part in beach volleyball, football and beach tennis games and workshops.
Children will have the chance to get up close to some of the creatures from the Cornish shoreline as aquarists from the Blue Reef Aquarium hold a Rockpool Roadshow at 2.30pm.
Lobsters, starfish and crabs native to our waters will be starring during the 30-minute display, which will also give parents some tips on how to make rockpooling safe and enjoyable for both their children, and the sealife they find.
The finals for the UK Pro Surf Tour and Legacy Events Elite Ironman and Diamond Lady competitions will run throughout the afternoon, and after the presentations it’s time for the Sunset Sessions to begin, with live music from Garron Frith, The Blind Hearts and Skintight starting at 5.00pm.

Notes to Editors
Surf Relief UK was set up to help co-ordinate the UK surfing community’s response to the Asian tsunami of Boxing Day 2004. Having experienced the generosity of the surfing community, organisers realised that there was potential to raise further funds for other projects by acting as the UK’s surfing charity. The SurfAble project introduces disabled young people to the sport of surfing - for many a life changing experience - at a series of one-day events run in partnership with the charity Lifeworks and a network of established surf schools around the country.
