White Stuff Surf Relief Festival
Watergate Bay, 26th July 2008

21st March 2007

National kitesurfing championships come to The Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay next week.

Britain’s best kitesurfers will flock to a north Cornwall beach next week to compete in the first event of the 2007 national championships.

The Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay will host the first round of the 2007 British Kitesurfing Association (BKSA) Freestyle Championships, from Thursday 29th March to Sunday 1st April.

Last year’s BKSA contest at Watergate Bay has gone down as the stuff of legend in the kiting world, thanks to perfect conditions and the renowned Extreme Academy hospitality.

“We’re really looking forward to kicking off the BKSA’s 2007 championships at The Extreme Academy,” said BKSA Chairman and event director Richard Gowers.

“Watergate Bay is a two mile stretch of kiting paradise, and last year’s event was one of the best of the championships; the Atlantic kindly served us with a more than generous swell and three days of constant 20-30 knot winds, which really challenged the riders.”

A full roster of the country’s top professional, amateur and junior kitesurfers are expected to enter the event. The 2006 British Champion, Lewis Crathern, won last year’s event at Watergate Bay has confirmed he intends to defend his title.

Crathern, from Worthing, will face stiff competition in the professional men’s division from veteran Cornishman Denzil Williams, and a strong contingent of up-and-coming young riders; particularly 17 year old Robin Snuggs from Weymouth; and Hayling Island’s Sam Light who finished third overall last year aged 15.

Favourite to win the ladies’ division is Plymouth’s Jo Wilson. The 26 year old is twice British women’s champion, and last year finished fourth on the PKRA world kitesurfing tour.

PRESS CALL: 2pm - 4pm ON THURSDAY 29TH MARCH 2007

A number of the competitors will also be available for interviews with media, including Lewis Crathern, Jo Wilson, Sam Light and Robin Snuggs. Interviews with competitors can be arranged in advance if required.
