11 new jobs have been created in Burnham-on-Sea with the opening of an independent pasty shop this week.

Located in the High Street, The Newquay Pasty Shop Company is owned by local husband and wife team Jeff and Jackie Welsh, who previously ran the award-winning tearoom JJ Welsh’s.

Jeff was the head chef of the tearoom for six years before a serious back injury saw him hospitalised twice in a six-month period, forcing him to consider a change of career. His love of pasties led him to reach an agreement with Cornish firm Crantock Bakery to supply the hand made products, which are baked fresh in the shop every day.

After completely redesigning and renovating the tea room into a Cornish-themed shop, Jeff said: “Pasties are an extremely popular product at the moment and we are more than happy to be linking up with Crantock Bakery and very proud to supply authentic Cornish pasties to the people of Burnham.”

Alongside 39 different varieties of pasties, the shops sell slices and sausage rolls, as well as bacon rolls. The shop also has a 33-seat café, designed by the couple, offering a selection of coffees including flavoured lattés and cappuccinos.

Leigh Loomes, National Sales Manager at Crantock Bakery, has been impressed by the Welsh’s dedication: “I feel the Newquay Pasty Shop Co. will be a great success as the business is well designed, sells quality food and is run by very experienced owners whose attention to detail is brilliant.

“In a short space of time we have formed a strong working partnership to move forward on. This has been one of the most pleasing projects I have worked on in a long time. The bake-off industry is growing and I’m pleased Jeff and Jackie are taking a slice.”

Former professional golfer Jeff, whose favourite pasty is Steak and Stilton, is excited by the prospect of running The Newquay Pasty Shop Co. and the lifestyle it should afford.

“We’re definitely looking forward to a new challenge and it’s great to be able to reopen our business in the town especially as we’ve rehired several members of our former team,” he said.

Despite just opening Jeff is looking to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather who owned 16 restaurants and cafes in and around the London area at the turn of the 20th century.

“We’re certainly not rushing the process, but we are currently looking for the right premises for another Newquay Pasty Shop Co. in Somerset,” he said.
