Cornish pasty classes for Newquay schoolchildren.

Children from a Cornish infant school have been learning how to make Cornish pasties following a visit from Crantock Bakery this week.

Staff from the award-wining bakery ran sessions about food production and nutrition for over 240 children, aged five to seven, at Newquay’s Trenance Infant School on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th September.

And as well as learning about the fresh ingredients that go into Cornish pasties, every one of the Year 1 & 2 pupils made a pasty of their own to bake at home.

Teaching Assistant Jackie Sutton, who together with Jane Tibbles has been co-ordinating the event, said: “We’ve put on a whole series of activities for the children around British Food Fortnight, and this visit from Crantock Bakery really lets the children roll up their sleeves and get messy.

“It’s been great fun making pasties, and it has given the children an insight into what makes up a healthy, balanced meal and the importance of knowing where ingredients come from and how food is prepared. And they’ve also heard about the history of the pasty and its origins in the county’s mining heritage.”

The week-long programme of activities has seen the children go on outings to Truscott’s fish and chip shop in Newquay, with a visit to the food hall at Kingsley Village planned for the end of the week.

The children will put their new skills to the test by designing a healthy Cornish meal in a competition to win cooking equipment for their school. The meal must use seasonal ingredients and contain a healthy balance of the food groups the body needs, including two portions that count towards our ‘5 a Day’.

For Crantock Bakery’s Catherine Webster the sessions have been inspiring and entertaining in equal measure. She said: “The children have been really enthusiastic about making pasties. It’s been a new experience for some of them but definitely one they have enjoyed. And some of their crimping has been incredible - the Cornish pasties of the future are in safe hands.”
