Crantock Bakery's new "Calzone" takes Italian food portable.

Crantock Bakery has just launched a revolutionary new product which combines the taste of Italy with the convenience of the Cornish staple, the pasty.

The Calzone, an Italian-inspired folded pizza, is the latest product to be developed by the award-winning bakery's in-house product development team.

The company saw an opportunity to use the skills and expertise of their existing workforce to expand the range of products they offer. Like pasties, the Calzone is a hand-finished product ideally suited to Crantock Bakery's bake-off customers.

“With so much experience in hand crimped pasties and innovative product development it seemed logical to create a new product that builds on our strengths,” said Crantock Bakery's New Product Development Manager Becky Hornabrook.

“I am delighted with how the Calzone has turned out. It is proving to be extremely popular with both new and existing customers and it has opened up a whole new market to us, which is really exciting.”

The Crantock Calzone is made from a specially developed yeast-free light dough enriched with olive oil - ingredients which make the product a healthy option.

The three fillings - margarita, pepperoni and bolognaise - were developed following research into flavours, textures and popularity. At just 179 calories the bolognese Calzone contains fewer calories than most chicken sandwiches.

Notes to Editors
Crantock Bakery is an award-winning manufacturer of Cornish pasties and bake-off products. Founded in 1981, the company employs over 150 people at their purpose-built bakery near Newquay in Cornwall. Following a multi-million programme of investment the 27,000 sq ft premises last year produced over 19 million pasties - all hand-crimped in the traditional Cornish way.
The continually-expanding product range includes sausage rolls, hand-raised pies, scones and 30 different pasties. The company is highly adept at developing bespoke products for their customers, who range from independent bakers to foodservice suppliers and supermarkets throughout the UK and Europe.
Crantock Bakery is the 2008 British Bakery Manufacturer of the Year.
