Best of British: Crantock Bakery wins national industry award.

Cornwall's Crantock Bakery has been crowned “Bakery Food Manufacturer of the Year” in the prestigious Baking Industry Awards held in London on 15 September 2008.

The awards, now in their 21st year, are recognised as the leading industry event for the bakery sector. The much coveted award is open to all bakery and bakery food manufacturing businesses that produce exceptional quality baked goods.

Being awarded the title of Bakery Food Manufacturer of the Year is a huge achievement, especially as Crantock were up against tough competition from Honeyrose Bakery in London and Pooles of Wigan.

This is the second time that Crantock Bakery has been shortlisted for the award and Managing Director Nick Ringer says that the growth of the company and new product development helped them to win this year.

“We’ve invested extensively in the business over the past few years, and our new and innovative product lines have opened up new markets to us," he said. "Our business has seen continued growth over the past year and winning this award reinforces our position as a major player in the market place.  

“The next 12 months look set to be very busy for the Bakery as we plan to launch a number of new product lines whilst continuing with our core business of traditional hand crimped pasties."

The award ceremony was attended by more than 900 people and categories were judged by independent industry experts and a representative from British Baker.

Melanie Somerville, Marketing Manager from category sponsor ADM Milling said: “This year saw the highest number and quality of entrants into this category than ever before. We were assessing entrants in terms of product quality, operational excellence, product innovation, marketing activity and looking for a business that really distinguishes themselves from others in the industry.  

“Crantock Bakery really stood out, excelling in all of these areas with a £2m investment programme enabling the company to grow by 30%, generating opportunities in new markets, successfully launching exciting new ranges in a traditional market whilst maintaining their quality hand made products they are famous for and increasing customer service satisfaction levels to 99%. Without a doubt, despite the tough competition, Crantock Bakery are truly worthy winners.”

Nick concluded:  “I am delighted to have won the award; it’s a great boost for our dedicated team of 130 full time staff and our local suppliers. Everyone has worked extremely hard over the past five years to bring Crantock Bakery to the level at which we can not only compete on a national level, but win.”

Crantock Bakery is an award-winning manufacturer of Cornish pasties and bake-off products. Founded in 1981, the company employs over 150 people at their purpose-built bakery near Newquay in Cornwall. Following a multi-million programme of investment the 27,000 sq ft premises last year produced over 19 million pasties - all hand-crimped in the traditional Cornish way.
The continually-expanding product range includes sausage rolls, hand-raised pies, scones and 30 different pasties. The company is highly adept at developing bespoke products for their customers, who range from independent bakers to foodservice suppliers and supermarkets throughout the UK and Europe.
