Cornish kitesurfer Andreya Wharry heads to Fiji to take on the world's best in the richest ever kitesurf competition.

Cornish kitesurfer Andreya Wharry will compete in the world’s richest ever kitesurf event for women next month.

Wharry, who holds the world record for the longest continuous kitesurf, will travel to Fiji in Ocober to take part in the Cindy Mosey Island Odyssey. The eight day event will see Dreya compete against some of the biggest names in the sport - including three world champions - for a share of $12,000.

And she is giving local businesses the chance to win a unique sponsorship package worth over £1000 in a raffle to be drawn at The Hotel and Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay.

“I’m really looking forward to going to Fiji to take part in the Cindy Mosey Island Odyssey,” said Dreya, 35, from Newquay. “The list of girls competing in the professional event reads like a who’s who of kitesurfing. I know lots of the girls really well from my years competing on the world circuit, so it will be fantastic to catch up with them in a dream location for what looks set to be a really different type of competition.”

Organised by three times PKRA world champion Cindy Mosey, the Island Odyssey is an all-girl adventure combining kiteboarding, learning, friendship, island exploration and a world record attempt by the best professional women kitesurfers.

The 12 professional riders will be competing in three different disciplines: freestyle, inter-island racing and boardercross. And, if conditions are favourable, the girls hope to set a new kitesurf speed world record.

They will also be joined by 28 up and coming amateur kitesurfers who will benefit from coaching sessions with the pro riders and witness some incredible competition.

“This is not the usual kiteboarding event, it’s really about us all sharing our knowledge - whether a professional rider or only quite new to the sport,” said event mastermind Cindy Mosey, from New Zealand. “I know women sometimes feel a little bit daunted turning up at a beach in a male-dominated sport, so I wanted an event that was just for them.”

The Cindy Mosey Island Odyssey takes place at the Kadavu island chain, Fiji, from 15th to 22nd October.

Dreya is offering local businesses the chance to win a one-off sponsorship package covering her involvement in the event. 20 raffle tickets are available at £50 each, with the winner to be drawn at 6.30pm on Friday 6th October at The Living Space, The Hotel and Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay.

The holder of the winning ticket will win an event sponsorship package worth over £1000, including logo placement alongside Dreya’s other sponsors, White Stuff, Flexifoil and the Extreme Academy, on her kiteboard and contest rash vest, and inclusion in all pre- and post-event media communications.

They will also win a meal for two at Fifteen Cornwall (wine not included); a day’s individual powerkite or kitesurf lesson with Dreya; event photography of Dreya featured in their company’s branding; signed photos of Dreya, and a signed event rash vest.

With the event set to receive media coverage both internationally and in the UK, there is scope for the winning sponsor to benefit from exposure that stems from an association with an athlete of Dreya’s pedigree.

Notes For Editors

Andreya Wharry is a former national and international Gladiators champion, wing-walker and world top ten kitesurfer. In September 2005 she set a world distance record by kitesurfing 134 miles from The Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay in Cornwall, to County Waterford in Ireland - a feat that saw her recognised by National Geographic Adventure magazine as one of their Adventurers of 2005.

The Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay is one of Britain’s leading venues for beach sports. Founded in 1999, the Extreme Academy comprises specialist schools for surfing, kitesurfing, waveski and mountainboarding; technical equipment hire; and the Extreme Store, stocking a wide range of clothing and technical equipment. The Beach Hut, newly refurbished and now located on the ground floor of The Extreme Academy, is well known as Cornwall’s coolest beach hangout, and a great place to eat.

The Hotel, Watergate Bay. After an extensive programme of refurbishment and a merger with the Extreme Academy, The Hotel, Watergate Bay offers an unique contemporary beach lifestyle on the north coast of Cornwall. Still family owned and run, The Hotel features a fresh modern look, AA Rosette dining and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Facilities include 70 bedrooms, two restaurants, two pools and a tennis court.

White Stuff, the fashion lifestyle clothing label, was founded in 1985. They currently have 35 White Stuff shops and over 100 wholesale outlets throughout the UK as well as a website and mail order business. The brand is definitely fashion for lovers not victims – and this is reflected in the relaxed styling, lovely detailing and discreet branding on their quality clothing. White Stuff customers are 25-40 ‘something’s’ who know the fashion trends but have their own sense of style.
